Fantasizing About Pleasure Reading

Yesterday morning I listened to the Barbara Kingsolver podcast from the Free Library of Philadelphia where she reads from her new novel, Flight Behavior.  It was my intention to get tickets to the event and go see her in person, but the event was sold out.  Listening to the podcast was nice because I was laying on my couch drinking a coffee after I had gone to the gym, stopped for coffee, and packed up a bunch of stuff in my apartment -- what a nice way to spend an hour between the hustle of the early morning and my pedagogy class at 9am, right?

I quickly found myself fantasizing about pleasure reading: laying on a new couch in a new house (be patient -- those details to follow in the coming weeks), drinking a cup of tea, while sunlight through the French porch doors dances across a page of a book cradled in my hands.  *sigh*  Doesn't that sound lovely?

Although I quickly had to shake the fantasy out of my head, I did resolve that Kingsolver's new book should be my first pleasure reading book in December.
Now, to be fair, it's not as if I don't already have a tall "to read" pile -- I do -- there's about 12-15 books already stacked up there.  But, what's the harm in adding one more and putting it at the top of the pile, right?!  Sometimes I have to remember that there ARE NO RULES for pleasure reading -- that's difficult for someone who likes structure, systems, and rules (to a point).  One day soon, when my "to read" pile is reassembled at my new location, I will share what is in that pile and discuss some of them -- most of the pile is poetry and writing about Buddhism, so be prepared.

More soon, friends.
